Alien Registration Card(ARC) application and extension guide

Hello, this is the Dongguk Institute of Korean Language.

Please refer to the following information on the new issuance and extension of alien registration card(ARC).


1. Target: Foreigners stay in Korea for more than 90 days

​2. New issuance (Individual Applications, group application not available) 

- For freshmen: If you plan to stay more than 90 days in Korea, you must receive your Alien registration card before the end of the 90 days. 

- For current students: You must apply for an extension of your Alien registration card before the expiry date of your stay.

- How to make: Make an online reservation at the immigration or foreigners office → Apply for certificate of enrollment and payment 

  (to the Institute of Korean Language office) → Receive the certificates at school →  Prepare all documents → Visit immigration/foreigners office 

  on reservation date → Receive a card at immigration/foreigners office on designated date 

3. Extension

- Individual application: Make an online reservation at the immigration or foreigners office → Apply for certificate of enrollment and payment 

  (to the Institute of Korean Language office) → Receive the certificates at school →  Prepare all documents → 

  Visit immigration/foreigners office on reservation date → Receive a card at immigration/foreigners office on designated date 

- Group application: Prepare documents except for certificates of enrollment and payment → Submit documents to school within the deadline 

   → Receive a card at school on designated date. 

※ Group application may not be possible according to the policy and situation of the immigration office, and if there is no group application 

    before the expiration date, individual applications must be made. When applying as a group, the school does not provide separate documents, 

    and if necessary, the student him/herself must obtain a foreign fact certificate from the Sejong-ro immigration office or community center near place of residence.

4. Required documents and details: Please see the attached manual

5. Change of address 

- Target: Foreigners who want to change any details regarding their address 

- Change Period: Within 14 days from the date of entry, report the change of residence to the local Immigration Office or Foreigner's Office.

- Report deadline: Report to the local Immigration Office within 14 days of the change

  ※ Payment of fines if reported after 14 days

- Required documents: Application form, Passport, Alien registration card, proof of residence(Housing contract, dormitory residence confirmation letter) 

- Notice: Students should report the changes themselves

- Inquiries: 1345 (Foreigner Support Center)

6. HiKOREA

- Foreigners can find information regarding Visa including valid date on immigration on the website “HiKOREA”

- You can process immigration and residence-related complaints through 'HiKOREA.'

- Available service on website: Report changes(passport no., address, etc.), make visit reservations 

- Website: www.hikorea.go.kr  

- Inquiries: 1345 (Foreigner Support Center)

7. Notice

- The new issuance and extension of the alien registration card must be managed by the student themselves and the school is not responsible 

  for any disadvantages caused by mismanagement.

- New issuance or extension of Alien Registration Cards (ARC) requires a visit to the local immigration office near your recidence.

- Students are not allowed to extend their Alien registration card upon failing 3 times in a row for basic level(level 1,2) and 2 times in a row 

  for intermediate level(level 3,4) and advanced level(level 5,6), as they will be expelled.

- In case of non-registered students in the next semester, the visa expires within 14 days of the end of the semester 

  regardless of the expiration period of the ARC.
